The Bhilai Institute of Technology (BIT) (Hindi: भिलाई प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान - दुर्ग) was established in Durg in 1986 as the first private engineering college in the state of Chattisgarh, India. It began at very modest scale with four undergraduate courses in Engineering (B.E.) and an intake capacity of 180 students, but has since risen to the status of an institution of repute for technical education and management studies with seven disciplines of engineering at the undergraduate level and six post graduate courses including MBA and MCA, and an annual intake strength of 780 in Bachelor of Engineering program alone.
The Institute is managed by a Board of Trustees which is headed by Managing Trustees. The Trust comprises duly constituted Governing Body consisting of the representatives of the Trust, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the State government of Chhattisgarh, the affiliating university, industrialists, senior bureaucrats, management experts, peoples' representatives, and notable social workers.[1]
All Courses offered by the Institute are approved by AICTE and affiliated to Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University (CSVTU).
BIT is an Institutional member of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), Institution of Engineers(India)(IEI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Institute of Steel Development and Growth (INSDAG), National HRD Network and American Information Resource Centre, Mumbai.
One of the premier engineering institutes of India,[2] Bhilai Institute of Technology – Durg is known to produce quality engineers. Updated version of Quality Management System ISO 9001:2000 is installed in the Institute by the International Certifying Authority M/s KVQA of Norway.
BIT-Durg is located at the threshold of Durg city beside NH-6 (aka the Grand Eastern Highway or GE road) in Chhattisgarh state, India. The whole establishment is spread over25 acres (100,000 m2) of land, in Bhilai House opposite to the Circuit house. Its proximity to Durg bus depot and Durg railway station facilitates fast commuting. Additionally, it is connected to each and every corner of Bhilai-Durg agglomeration through various means of transportation such as mini buses, Minidors, Tempos, Auto-Rickshaws, etc.
Commissioning of the Bhilai Steel Plant at Bhilai in 1959[3] necessitated for having suitably trained and skilled personnel in good numbers to do specific technical tasks of the plant. With this viewpoint, some organizations, industrialists, charitable institutions and philanthropic societies of the region took an initiative to establish an engineering institution and therefore a trust was formed and duly registered. The Government of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh accorded the permission to open a self supporting and self financing engineering institute and thus in July 1986, Bhilai Institute of Technology came into existence.
Seth Balkrishan was a philanthropist and a key founding member of this institution. His contribution in the fields of education, sports, social upliftment and the spiritual needs of the community are legendary in Bhilai and in the neighboring regions. This institute is therefore tributed to him.
